I’ve checked Amazon Japan, and I’ve noticed that for this year, the volumes that got released were the following: Volume 53 (contains the Soul Switching Arc), Volume 54 (4 chapters’ worth of Sakamoto and Mutsu’s past), Volume 55 (Shimaru Saito from the Shinsengumi debuted here + 5 chapters of Love Incense Arc), and Volume 56 (Kamui on the cover + start of the current arc, the Shogun Assassination [Plan] Arc).
Volume 53, according to the reviewers, was okay. The lowest was a single 2-star review, and the reception was positive.
One-half of those 4 Volumes released this year, which happen to be Volume 54 and 55, were not well-received by the Japanese, particularly Volume 55 where some people actually complained that if the whole book was about the Yoshiwara Arc, he’d sell the volume immediately at Book Off.
The international fans may have been okay with the Yoshiwara chapters, but the Japanese were not exactly happy with it, especially since their Gin-san was portrayed as some sex maniac for laughs, and was done distastefully. (long story short, the reviewer was not happy with the vulgarity, and the fact that elementary school children were mentioned for laughs was not funny)
[Honestly speaking, even I couldn’t stomach that arc, despite the fact Tsukuyo was there, all because of the crude humor.]
As seen on the link above, Volume 55 did not, according to the Japanese, “feel like Gintama anymore”. The vulgarity and the perverted jokes were still there, but it was done in a way that the Japanese did not like.
Add to that, around after the Soul Switching Arc, Sorachi started getting sloppy, starting with doing random one-shot stories. (one reason why I did not buy the Weekly JUMP magazines during that period was because of these, because it was not interesting) The Japanese were okay with Sakamoto and Saito’s stories, but the Yoshiwara Arc may have been the last straw for them, and that the random one-shots were boring.
In Japan, the best way to let the manga-ka know that you’re displeased with their work is to not buy their manga, which is probably what a lot of Japanese did, hence, the bad sales for 2014.
Volume 56 came out just last October, and the scores recovered all of a sudden. That was the turning point; by Volume 56, Sorachi introduced the current arc, and everyone started buying the manga volumes again.
If you’re updated with the manga, you’ve noticed that the tone of the series suddenly went serious, and that Sorachi suddenly began laying out his cards on the table, leaving a lot of the readers guessing and questioning the turn of events, instead of going, “Meh, this is boring.”. I’m guessing that this is probably Sorachi’s last chance to court back the readers who have been disappointed with the previous chapters he has worked on.
It sounds probably weird and desperate from our point of view, that he’s trying to regain the readers who have dropped the series, but competition is tough for him right now; even if Naruto ended, there’s still Bleach, One Piece, HaiKyuu!!, and a lot of Shounen JUMP series to contend with. Not to mention, Gintama can easily be pulled out of the Weekly JUMP line-up and be replaced by a new series.
Besides, Japan is, and forever will be his target audience. If they don’t like what he’s doing, he has to change it to suit to their tastes.
Right now, it seems like he’s doing it right, in terms of positive reviews, at least.
The international fandom can only do so much though; we can probably help with the sales if we buy the manga, but honestly speaking, Gintama’s fate lie in the hands of the Japanese consumers.
I’m just hoping that despite the economic recession, people will still buy Volume 57 next year.
