The OVA are episodes bundled with the manga as a bonus for manga readers. The TV series and it's second season Z are for more of the general public. Since I assume you aren't a manga reader it's easier to watch the OVA between the two TV series that way you have already had the characters introduced and understand their dynamics even though the events take place scattered throughout.
