EUR/USD
The EUR got a boost on Thursday via a rather modest monetary policy news conference held by ECB President Mario Draghi. The one major thing Draghi managed to do was not scare investors. Although he spoke about a tough economic path ahead for the European Union, he managed to essentially say that the road taken thus far is the correct avenue. Time will tell. But for now it appears that the EUR which had been battered the better part of the week showed that some of the ‘bad news’ shadowing the Single Currency may have been digested at least in the short term. Going into the weekend investors will get a chance to prove if they have the fortitude to take long EUR positions and hold them.
Gold
Gold proved that it was an early barometer on Thursday. This because the precious metal gained the previous two days even as the USD remained at its strongest values. Gold traded sideways yesterday signaling perhaps that investors had bought the precious metal early in anticipation of a short term rally in the EUR. As of this morning Gold stands around 1647.00 USD.
Oil
Crude Oil dropped in value slightly on Thursday showing that it remains locked in a rather consolidated high value range. Crude Oil has been rather strong for two months as political pressure has been put on Iran and traders have worried about supply cuts and embargo talk. In the meantime Crude Oil remains a rather interesting opportunity to test its speculative trend and rather pricy values.
S&P, NASDAQ, DOW
Wall Street turned in modest gains on Thursday. On a day however when the ECB managed to deliver a rather stable outlook for investors as the central bank partakes in its confidence game, U.S. investors could not shake off disappointing Retail Sales data and a bad weekly Unemployment Claims number. Today the States will release its Trade Balance reports, but the significant impetus could come via the University of Michigan and its Prelim University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment readings
